There isn’t much point in visiting a tiny island in the middle of a thriving channel if you’re only going to gaze at the waves from dry land, so why not avail of a friendly, safe and reliable charter launch service during your stay? After all, beautiful views work in both directions, so where better to enjoy the sight of the jewel-like island of Sark than from a boat offshore?
The 38’ passenger launch “Cygnus Cyfish” is fully licensed by H.E. The Lieutenant Governor of Guernsey for passenger travel between Guernsey, Herm, Alderney and Sark, and is insured for up to 12 passengers. With a maximum speed of 20 knots (for those non-nautical types, that’s pretty impressive) the boat is easily accessed from its usual departure / landing point, the Inter Island Quay, known locally as the “Sark Berth”, just a couple of hundred metres walk from a taxi rank.
You can bring personal luggage with your on your trip, and even, within reason, your bicycle or pet! (Though the maximum passenger number for safety reasons really is 12.)
The Skipper is fully qualified and licensed by the MCA and Guernsey Harbours, and the outfit is insured for basic Public liability up to £3m, though of course all passengers do travel at their own risk and it’s helpful if you also have your own personal travel insurance.
Unfortunately the design and required safety parameters of the vessel means it is not really suitable for physically disabled persons and any children under 16 travelling unaccompanied will need prior agreement.
A Full complement of lifejackets, safety equipment, first aid etc. is carried and maintained according to MCA regulations. A limited number of Children’s lifejackets etc. are also available, and of course it’s preferred if you turn up sober!
Here’s a basic overview of distances and times:
– Guernsey to Sark 9 miles (30 minutes)
– Sark to Jersey 24 miles (1hr 25mins)
– Sark to Alderney 22 miles (1hr 15mins)
– Sark to Weymouth 73 miles (4hrs 30mins)
